About Nyeri County

Nyeri County is located between the Aberdare Range and the western slopes of Mount Kenya, bordering Laikipia, Meru, Kirinyaga, Murang'a and Nyandarua counties. Nyeri Town serves as the county headquarters. Fertile volcanic soils, forests and abundant rivers support tea, coffee, dairy farming, horticulture and livestock production. The population is predominantly Kikuyu alongside residents from other Kenyan communities. Tourism is supported by Aberdare National Park, Mount Kenya National Park and cultural heritage sites. Nyeri is known for preserving Kikuyu traditions while embracing modern agriculture and enterprise. Historically, it played a central role in the Mau Mau liberation movement and is associated with former President Mwai Kibaki, Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai and marathon champion Catherine Ndereba.
