About Wajir County

Wajir County lies in northeastern Kenya, bordering Mandera, Garissa, Marsabit, Isiolo, Ethiopia and Somalia. Wajir Town serves as the county headquarters. Vast semi-arid plains, seasonal rivers and sparse vegetation characterize the landscape. The population is predominantly Somali, with pastoralism deeply rooted in the local way of life. Camels, cattle, goats and sheep form the backbone of the economy, supported by livestock markets and cross-border trade. Small-scale irrigation farming is practiced where water is available. The county preserves rich Somali traditions through oral literature, Islamic scholarship and community leadership. Historically, Wajir has played an important role in regional trade and livestock marketing while investments in infrastructure, education and healthcare continue to improve livelihoods.
