About Tana-River County

Tana River County lies in southeastern Kenya and is dominated by the Tana River, Kenya's longest river. Hola is the county headquarters. Floodplains support farming despite generally arid conditions. The Pokomo, Orma, Wardey, and other communities contribute to its cultural diversity. Agriculture along the river produces rice, maize, bananas, and vegetables, while pastoralism remains important in drier areas. Fishing, conservation, and irrigation schemes contribute to the economy. The county includes ecologically important wetlands and the Tana River Primate National Reserve. Historically it has long been a meeting point for farming and pastoral communities.
