About Muranga County

Muranga County is located in Kenya's Central Highlands, bordering Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Machakos and Embu counties. Murang'a Town is the county headquarters. Fertile volcanic soils, rolling hills, forests and rivers support intensive agriculture. The population is predominantly Kikuyu. Tea, coffee, avocados, macadamia nuts, bananas, dairy farming and horticulture are the leading economic activities alongside agro-processing and trade. Tourism is supported by waterfalls, the Aberdare forests and cultural attractions. Murang'a preserves rich Kikuyu traditions through music, folklore and ceremonies. Historically the county was a major centre of the Mau Mau movement and has produced many influential political, academic and business leaders.
