About Meru County

Meru County lies on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya, bordering Isiolo, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Nyeri and Laikipia counties. Meru Town is the county headquarters and commercial centre. Fertile volcanic soils, abundant rainfall and diverse climatic zones make the county one of Kenya's most productive agricultural regions. The population is predominantly Meru alongside many other Kenyan communities. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy, producing tea, coffee, miraa, bananas, dairy products and horticultural crops. Tourism also contributes through Meru National Park and Mount Kenya National Park. The county preserves rich Meru traditions expressed through music, dances, folklore and age-set systems. Historically Meru played an active role in Kenya's independence struggle and has produced influential leaders in politics, education, business and public service.
