About Kirinyaga County

Kirinyaga County lies on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, bordering Nyeri, Murang'a, Embu and Meru counties. Kerugoya is the county headquarters. Fertile volcanic soils, rivers and a favourable climate make agriculture the county's main economic activity. The population is predominantly Kikuyu. Rice production in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme gives Kirinyaga national importance, while coffee, tea, dairy farming, aquaculture and horticulture also contribute significantly to the economy. Mount Kenya National Park and scenic landscapes support tourism. The county preserves Kikuyu traditions through folklore, ceremonies and music. Historically, Kirinyaga contributed significantly to Kenya's independence movement and continues to play an important role in agricultural innovation and national food production.
